Dr. Vernon N. Reinhold, 95, died on August 3, 2026 at the Haven at Lee. He was born on May 13, 1931 in Beverly, MA, the son of the late Frank W. and Helen L. (Nye) Reinhold.
Vern grew up in Beverly and was a graduate of Essex Agricultural School in Davers, MA. After serving his country in the US Naval Seabees during the Korean War, He took advantage of the G.I. Bill to achieve both a B. S. degree in Chemistry and an M.S. degree in Biochemistry at the University of New Hampshire, remarkably without ever attending a formal high school. He pursued his Ph. D. at the University of Vermont Medical School and obtained his degree in 1965. After a brief initial post-doctoral fellowship at the Brookhaven National Energy Laboratory, Vern turned his attention to the chemistry and structure of glycoconjugates. With a Helen-Hay Whitney fellowship, he studied the chemistry and structure of carbohydrates at Harvard Medical School and MIT by mass spectrometry. Vern would stay on at Harvard for the next 25 years developing cutting-edge approaches for elucidating carbohydrate structures. Following his work at other institutions, he landed back at UNH in the late 1990’s where he served as a Professor of Biochemistry and Chemistry, as well as the Director of the Glycomics Center.
In addition to his pioneering work in the elucidation of glycan structures by mass spectrometry, He previously served as President of the Society (1999) and was the Founder of the International Charles Warren Workshop on Glycoconjugate Analysis. In 2015 he was the recipient of the Rosalind Kornfeld Award for Lifetime Achievement in Glycobiology. As a true statement to his legacy, his three sons are all graduate physicists and have followed his example of academic research excellence.
A longtime resident of Lee, NH, he is survived by his wife of 72 years, Norma A. (Bennett) of Lee, NH; 5 children, Brian Reinhold and his wife Patty of Candia, NH, Bruce Reinhold and his wife Song of Cambridge, MA, Barry Reinhold and his wife Claire of Lee, NH, Laurel George and her husband Dan of Fremont, NH, and Laureen Carr and her husband Michael of Ft.
