Final Salute

Jay Riley Childers, born on Aug. 4, 1949, has passed away at the age of 76. “JayBird” was a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, cherished friend and devoted family member whose kindness, strength and generous spirit touched the lives of so many.

A proud graduate of Glynn Academy’s Class of 1967, Jay answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Navy. He proudly served with the Navy Seabees as part of both the Pacific Fleet and the Atlantic Fleet, demonstrating a lifelong commitment to service, hard work and dedication.

After his military service, Jay found his true calling on the water. For more than 30 years, he was a respected charter fishing captain on St. Simons Island. He shared his knowledge of the local waters, his passion for fishing and his love of the Georgia coast with countless friends, visitors and fellow anglers. Those fortunate enough to spend time aboard his boat often left with lasting memories and a newfound friend.

Jay was known for his warm heart, quiet strength and willingness to lend a helping hand. He treasured time spent with family and friends, and his greatest pride was the love he had for those closest to him. His gentle nature, sense of humor and steadfast presence will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

He is survived by his loving daughter, Heather Hamby and her husband, David Hamby; his cherished grandchildren, Ashley Childers and Wesley Maxwell and his wife, Mackenzie Maxwell; and his beloved great-grandson, Jay Riley Childers, who proudly carries his great-grandfather’s name; his older sister, Sally Beck; and his younger brother, Shelby Childers and his wife, Renee. He was preceded in death by his parents, Laconia Imogene Buffalo and John Bynum Childers; his brother, John B Childers III; and his granddaughter, Jessica Childers. Jay also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, extended family members, dear friends and the countless lives he touched throughout the years.

Jay’s legacy is one of service, compassion, friendship and a deep love for the sea. While his absence leaves an immeasurable void, his memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Jay’s celebration of life will take place from 4-7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2026, at American Legion Post 166, 1013 Arthur J. Moore Drive, on St. Simons Island.

JayBird will be missed dearly, remembered often and loved always.
