Final Salute

Charlie “Chuck” Nelson Lovejoy, 77, passed away peacefully at his home in Matthews, North Carolina, on August 31, 2026, with his devoted wife by his side. Born on January 8, 1949, in Charleston, West Virginia, to the late Fred and Zelda Lovejoy, Chuck lived his life as a man of true integrity—someone whose word was ironclad and whose loyalty to family and friends never wavered.

Chuck took immense pride in his country and found his greatest joy in the freedom of the outdoors. He was proud to serve his country as a Navy Seabee, dedicating his time and talents to the service of others. Whether he was meticulously working on a landscaping project, enjoying a quiet round of golf, or admiring the lines of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, he deeply appreciated the satisfaction of a hard day’s work and a job well done. He was also a master of the backyard grill. Over their 20 wonderful years of marriage, grilling hamburgers became a legendary, affectionate competition between Chuck and his beloved wife, Sherry. While they always debated who made the superior burger, the true prize was always the laughter and memories they shared.

Those who knew Chuck best knew the simple shortcuts to his heart: a bowl of Blue Bell Cherry Vanilla ice cream, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, or a cold Coca-Cola. He possessed a beautiful singing voice and a vibrant spirit that found happiness in life’s simplest pleasures. Yet, beyond his hobbies, it was Chuck’s character that defined him. He was a steady, hardworking, and deeply dependable man who showed his love through consistent actions rather than grand gestures. He was the rock his family could always lean on, and whenever asked for help, his answer was always a resounding, “Absolutely.”

Chuck’s earthly journey has ended, but his legacy lives on in the family he cherished and the countless lives he touched. We comfort ourselves knowing that somewhere beyond this life, there is a perfectly landscaped golf course, a Harley waiting for its next ride, a grill fired up, and all the Cherry Vanilla ice cream he could ever want.

A private graveside service with military honors will be held at Salisbury National Cemetery on September 11th.
