Final Salute

Mabey, Charles W. ”Jiggs” , Sr. age 98, of Hawley, PA, passed away on Thursday, July 2, 2026.

Born in Paterson, Charles had resided in Hawthorne before moving to Matamoras, and then Hawley. Jiggs was a former U.S Navy Veteran, serving with the famous Seabees. He was a 31 year veteran of the Hawthorne Police Department, achieving the rank of Sergeant, and became well-known as the borough’s motorcycle officer. He was a member of the Hawthorne PBA Local #200. Charles was a charter member of the Hawthorne Volunteer Fire Company #1. He was also a successful stock car driver. Under the name Russ Meyer, he won the 1976 Middletown Raceway Championship.

Charles W. Mabey, Sr. was the son of the late Martin J. Mabey and Florence (nee Simerson) Mabey. Husband of the late Dorothy H. (nee Meyer) Mabey (November 1978). Father of JoAnn Vaitovas Rusko of Hawley, PA, Laura Stamidis, of Queens, NY, and the late Charles Mabey Jr (May 2026). Grandfather of Christine, Charles III, Marty, Steven, Danielle, Jessica, Stephanie, and Anthony Mabey, and Willaim Jones III, and Tanya Vaitovas. Great grandfather and great great grandfather to several. Brother of the late Florence J. Boyd (2009).

Funeral service will be held at 10:30am on Wednesday, July 8, 2026 at the Browning-Forshay Funeral Home, 557 Lafayette Avenue, Hawthorne. Interment will follow at the Laurel Grove Memorial Park, Totowa. Friends may visit with the family at the funeral home on Tuesday, from 4:00 to 8:00pm.
