Final Salute

On June 19, 2023 Donald (Dinny) Thomas Yanick, 95, of the “Greatest Generation” went home to be with his Lord Jesus Christ. Donald was born in Shamokin (Coal Run) Pennsylvania on July 18, 1927. After his years in Shamokin he later made his home in New Castle, Delaware where he raised his family. He was married to his loving wife Grace D. (Whary) for 70 beautiful years. Donald lived a very blessed life as a Catholic and a life time parishioner of Holy Spirit and Our Lady of Fatima parishes and New Castle, Delaware.

Donald at an early age worked in the coal mines near Shamokin, PA to support his family during the Great Depression. He was a lifetime member of the Brady Volunteer Fire Company. He proudly served our Country in the United States Navy in World War II and the Korean War. He was stationed in the South Pacific – Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands as a Navy Seabee and later commissioned on several ships during the Korean War. He is a member of the VFW. After serving his country, Donald began his next career with General Motors / UAW for 35 years until his retirement in 1985. After retirement he dedicated his time working at family owned business, Castle Construction of DE with his two sons, Dennis and Don.

Throughout his life Donald loved to play cards, read, watch WW II movies, and golf with friends. You could always find him watching sports and his favorite Philadelphia teams – especially the Phillies (Sundays with Mert). He loved spending time with his family and seeing his grandkids always made him smile. Donald is survived by his loving family – his wife, Grace (Whary) Yanick; son, Donald A. Yanick (wife Karen) and son, Dennis W .Yanick (wife Theresa); grandchildren, Brittany, Sydney and Nathan; sister, Esther Will. He was predeceased by his father and mother, Phillip and Josephine Worgan Yanick; brothers and sisters, John Yanick, Stella Sabotchick, Francis Dabulis, Angeline Galinski and Phyllis Dushenshine.

A viewing will be from 10:00AM until 11:00AM with a Funeral Mass at 11:00AM on Thursday, June 22, 2023 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 12 Winder Road, New Castle, DE. Entombment with United States Navy military honors will follow the Mass in Gracelawn Memorial Park, New Castle.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to Holy Spirit Catholic Church (New Castle, DE) and the Howard Weston Senior Center (New Castle, DE).
