Final Salute

Douglas H. Raymond 87 of Sioux City passed away Thursday, August 20, 2026. A memorial service will be 2:00 P.M. on Friday, September 18, 2026 with military honors at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel in Sioux City.

Doug was born in Malone, New York to Edward and Marion Raymond on October 12, 1938. He was the oldest of six children; siblings James (Joan), Robert (Mary), Richard (Lenona), Susan and Thomas (Debra).

Doug graduated from Evergreen High School in 1957 in Evergreen, Colorado. After high school, he served as an altar boy at his local church. His lifelong buddy, Charles (Hoot) and him were offered a trip to Europe with their priest and 5 other priests to mentor them going into the priesthood. Doug took the opportunity and often talked about his experiences on that 2-month trip with the highlight going to the Vatican and meeting the Pope.

When he returned home, he started working with his Dad and brothers building homes in Colorado and he continued in construction for over 60 years. In 1962, Doug joined the Naval Reserves and was later activated and deployed to Guam and Vietnam as a Navy Seabee, the construction battalion of the Navy. Motto “We Build, We Fight”.

After the service, he returned home and joined the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He held many offices with the VFW and worked with the veterans for over 50 years. In 1983, Doug became the Colorado State Commander and served for a year. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and proud of his work as a member and very proud to be an American.

Doug worked as a Service Officer with the Department of Veterans Affairs in Colorado for almost 20 years helping veterans obtain their VA benefits

He is survived by his wife, Sharleen and several step children: Skip (Sheila) Schossow, Luann (Mike) Wineinger, Michelle Hostetter, Kelly Geerdes and Charles Tartaglia as well as several step grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Leota (Meyer) Raymond, stepchildren LaVonne Gissel, Lenona Raymond, brothers Richard and James Raymond and sister Susan Wray.
