Stephen Herring—known lovingly as Steve, Dad, and Grandpa—passed away on October 6, 2026, at the age of 66. Born on August 24, 1960, Stephen’s life was a testament to love, service, and dedication, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Stephen was the cherished son of the late Ernest and Joyce Herring. He is predeceased by his dear brother, Thomas Herring, and his beloved son, Joshua Herring. His unwavering love and resilience were a guiding light for his surviving siblings, Laurie and Paul Herring, and his children, Brandy Lorch, Leigh’Anna Smith, and Sean Mayhugh. To his grandchildren—Emily Bargiel, Camryn Smith, Caleb Herring-Smith, Khloe Herring, and Paige Ozuna—and his great-granddaughter, Jacquelyn Bargiel, he was simply “Grandpa,” a role he cherished above all else. His family was his greatest joy, and he relished every quiet moment and noisy family gathering spent with them.
Steve served his country with honor in the United States Navy for over 21 years as a Construction Electrician in the Seabees, living out the proud “Can Do” spirit. His military career was a central part of his life, instilling values of discipline, hard work, and integrity that he carried into everything he did.
A proud 1978 graduate of Pensacola Catholic High School, Steve returned to his alma mater as a cherished member of the staff in 2020. A beloved figure on campus, Steve served in many roles over the years. He kept the grounds looking fresh and clean with his skill in painting and maintenance, served as the resident grill master at football games, and was the first warm, smiling face families would see as they arrived on campus each morning. He even stood in for Santa Claus on more than one occasion, bringing joy and warmth to the entire CHS community.
In his leisure time, Steve found joy in the vibrant and simple pleasures of life. He was a passionate fan of Mardi Gras and made it a point to attend every parade he possibly could, soaking in the celebration, music, and tradition. He was also an avid fisherman who found peace and solace in the quiet embrace of nature, and he had a fondness for Westerns, enjoying classic tales of adventure and courage. Above all, Steve was known for his generous spirit, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need.
Steve’s legacy of kindness, joy, and service lives on through his family and the countless lives he impacted. He will be remembered for his warm smile, his gentle nature, and his unwavering commitment to those he loved.
