Final Salute

Dwayne “Mac” McMinn whose favorite names were Dad, Mac, grandpa and grandpa Mac passed away in his sleep in his favorite chair on Friday, February 11th, 2022.

Memorial services will be at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, February 15, 2022, in First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Murray Gossett officiating. Private burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Dwayne was a loved and respected man who was born on December 21st, 1934, in Amarillo to William Leland McMinn and Ella Mae Moon. He was a life-long resident of Amarillo, Tx.

In 1952, while a junior at Amarillo High School, he joined the Navy Reserves (SeaBees). After graduating Amarillo High School he went active duty in 1954 and was stationed in the Marshall Islands and Philippines until 1956. The same year he went to Amarillo College. He attended West Texas State University and received his Bachelor’s degree in Science. After finishing college, he set his sights on his soulmate Kay Kendrick and got married in October of 1959. They were married for 57 years.

After dabbling in construction since the 1980’s building houses all his life and spending 35 years as a computer programmer on the IBM main frames he retired in 2000, but let’s face it, he still had a burning passion for building homes and continued to build, as-long-as he was able. Coming from a large family, he understood the value of being a patriarch.

At 87 years old he was still full of life, love and joy. Raising three daughters who excelled in their professions, Kim, Molly and Meredith, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Dwayne was fun-loving, adventurous, competitive and all in with everything he did. He played golf, dominos, bridge and of course a huge fan of the football team the Texas Longhorns. Dwayne and Kay shared a lot of activities together such as square dancing, bridge, symphony, traveling abroad and much more. Founded in 1967, Mac was a Charter Member of the Amarillo Handball Club. Another one of his many passions. He would always bring his girls down to the Y to watch him play. After the games Dwayne would let them come down to the courts and hit the handballs around. He had such a good swing in golf that in 2002 he hit his first career Hole in One on Hole #7 at 175 yards with his 7 iron at the Canyon Country Club. He had so much to do during his life it was almost impossible to keep up. Every Christmas Eve the whole family would gather in the living room and he would have trivia questions. Whoever got it correct, got the notorious two-dollar bill.

He has a collection of badges that range from U.S. Marshall’s, Arizona Ranger, Special Deputy Sheriff Sonoma County, El Paso City Marshall to name a few. In Dwayne’s final days he loved to spoil his great-grandchildren with books, two-dollar bills and they never got thumped.

He was preceded in death by his wife Kay McMinn in 2016 and a grandson, Austin Carter in 2005.

Mac is survived by three daughters, Kim Meadors and husband Kevin; Molly McMinn; and Meredith McMinn, all of Amarillo; his special friend, Allee Bass, of Amarillo; two sisters, LaVerne Black of Amarillo and Deanna Hyatt of Fairview, TX; six grandchildren, Chase, Chad, Landon, River, Dakota and Lily; and seven great-grandchildren.

Though his passing was unexpected, please keep him in all of your thoughts and prayers as we lay him to rest. We will always love you Dad, Mac, Grandpa and Grandpa Mac!
