Final Salute

FRIEDMAN, Elwin A. Passed away peacefully at home in Sebastopol, surrounded by family and friends, on Sunday, May 1, 2005 at the age of 83. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years, Beatrice, his parents Leo and Gussie Friedman, and his sister Laura Oppenheim; and is survived by his loving children Gail Friedman of Guerneville and Jim Friedman of Sebastopol. He is also survived by his cousin Arthur Rittenberg of NY, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Leo and Ethel Goldberg of MD, niece Cindy Dubuque of San Francisco, niece Sylvia Sanford and her husband Art of CT, and nephew Jack Goldberg of VA. A native of Maine, he was a veteran of the US Navy, serving with the SeaBees in the South Pacific during World War II. A resident of Sonoma County for the past 22 years, he was a long time member of Temple Beth Ami. An active man, with a wonderful sense of humor, he will be deeply missed by all who knew him, especially his family and close friends. Elwin was gracious, modest and unassuming. An honest man filled with kindness, generosity and integrity, he gave of himself freely. With the genuine appreciation and compliments which he expressed to people, he had a way of making others feel special. Accepting people as individuals, there was no place for prejudice in his world. Even when he himself was suffering, his sense of humor would put others at ease. An intelligent man with great curiosity and a thirst for knowledge, he could speak on many subjects. Elwin enjoyed this life and bravely embraced the journey to his next one with the vision of the one woman he loved, lighting the way. All are welcome to attend Graveside Services on Sunday, May 8, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at Santa Rosa Memorial Park, 1900 Franklin Ave., Santa Rosa with Rabbi George Schlesinger of Congregation Beth Ami officiating.
