Final Salute

HABER, George O. Died peacefully at home January 17, 2002 at age 92. Born in Santa Rosa November 11, 1909, he attended Santa Rosa schools. He moved to San Francisco in 1927, where he worked for the Market Street Railway, then for the City and County of San Francisco as a street car mechanic. He married Patricia Grace Murray in 1929. He served in the SeaBees from 1942-1945, returning to San Francisco as Municipal Railway shop foreman. He and Patricia moved back to Santa Rosa and in 1947 adopted a baby daughter. They remained in Santa Rosa, with George working as a US Postal letter carrier from 1947 until his retirement in 1970. Active in his community, he served on the Bellevue School District Board for 9 years, was treasurer of the Bellevue Fire District from 1946-1962, and president of the Sonoma County Firemen’s Assn. in 1951. He joined Santa Rosa Moose Lodge 458 in 1950 and was an active member until his death, holding many important offices, including Governor (1964-1965), and Treasurer (1978-1984). His wife Patricia died in February 1965, and he married Katherine May Wheeler in September of that year. Katherine died in 1979. In addition to his daughter Patricia May Haber, Santa Rosa, he is also survived by his long-time companion Clara Christiansen; sisters Agnes Vinci and Mary Momsen of Santa Rosa, brother William Haberhauer of Fort Bragg, granddaughter Nichole Van Laer and great grandson Matthew Knoles of Santa Rosa; and step daughters June Wheeler McDonald of Santa Rosa and Jacky Gildof of Sumner, WA. We all loved him very much. He is interred at Santa Rosa Memorial Park. AT his request, no services were held.
