J.R. Meriwether Obituary

J.R. Meriwether, 94, passed away on 24th July, 2019 in Mobile, Alabama. A memorial service will be held at Satsuma United Methodist Church on Monday, 29th July, at 2:00pm, preceded by a viewing beginning 12:30pm.

Born in Sarasota, Florida, to parents James Rice Meriwether and Louise Elisabeth (Redd) Meriwether, he grew up on a farm, and enlisted as a Seabee in the United Sates Navy during World War II. He served in the South Pacific at Guadalcanal, Finschhafen, and the Admiralty Islands.

Upon his return, he worked on the railroad, then obtained his Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Alabama in 1952. A member of the Mobile Bar Association, he formed Agee & Meriwether PC in Chickasaw, Alabama with his partner Mr. Owen Agee, and practiced there until the day before his passing.

He was an active Freemason for over 50 years, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a volunteer with the American Red Cross Water Safety and Disaster Services, and a member of the Satsuma United Methodist Church. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, sailing, playing guitar, and singing.

Mr. Meriwether is preceded in death by his siblings, Katherine, Louise, Dorothea, Maribel, Edwin, Martha, John, and “Little Sister” Elizabeth, as well as his first wife, Elizabeth.

He is survived by his children, Ellen, Nick, Gayle, Jamie, Melissa, and Andrew; grandchildren Jimmie, Barney, John, Bradly, Matt, Zack, Beth, Amara, and Liam; 14 great grandchildren; and his second wife, Joan. He is also survived by Marie Morris, his devoted friend and legal assistant, as well as his son-in-law, Aaron, who walked beside him during his final years.

He will be laid to rest in the Friendship Baptist Church cemetery on Wednesday, 31st July, 2019. He was deeply loved by his family and will be dearly missed.
