Mr. John James Whitesell

John James Whitesell passed away at home on March 6, 2026. He was born to Veronica Mickens and Theodore Whitesell on November 17, 1927, in Detroit Michigan. He is preceded in death by his mother, father, brother Myrl Whitesell and nephew Gary Sutter.

John moved to Salem in the late 60’s encouraged by a budding housing market. He developed and constructed many apartments, duplexes and subdivisions in Salem and surrounding areas. He was great at seeing investment opportunities and helping others start businesses.

John joined the Navy in 1944 at 17 years old. He served his country as a Seabee in the Marshall Islands where he learned the construction trade. When asked what his greatest memory was, he said it was during WWII where he saw numerous Victory Gardens, flags flying, communities pulling together, and young boys eager to serve their country.

John learned to fly later becoming an instructor and working as a pilot. He also loved listening to all kinds of music, playing the poker machines, shooting pool and a good round of golf with his buddies.

John traveled to Asia and fell in love with the Philippines. He loved the culture, food, golf and a young woman named Emma Olaso. They were married and created a wonderful life in the Philippines and in Salem.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, a daughter, Ana Payne (Daniel Payne), 3 grandchildren, Jessica, Joseph, and Victoria as well as 2 great grandsons: Mason and James . He also leaves behind his siter Jacqueline (Mel) Neill and his beloved nephews: Roy, Scott, Ricky and Brad Sutter.

Services will be held 1:00 PM, Wednesday March 11th at City View Funeral Home.
