John Kruse, of Walthill, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of October 24, 2026, at Oakland Heights and Assisted Living Care Center.

Born on July 26, 1926, in Walthill, Nebraska, at what is now The Susan La Flesche Picotte Center, John Kruse has led a life marked by commitment to family, community, and country. The son of Richard John Kruse and Ethel (Wallerstedt) Kruse, John’s early years were spent in the heartland of Nebraska, where he cultivated a deep appreciation for the land and its bounties.

John passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of October 24, 2026 at the Oakland Heights Care Center. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Ethel Kruse; his older sister, Marjorie Daugherty; his older brother Richard (Dick) Kruse; his younger brother, Paul Kruse; and stepson, Tommy Jones.

John’s educational journey began at Walthill Public School, continuing in Omaha after his family’s move. A proud graduate of Central High School in 1944, John was a natural leader, serving as an ROTC Cadet Leader. His education continued at the University of Nebraska, where he earned a degree in Business in 1950. During his university years, he was an active member of the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity, fostering lifelong friendships and values.

John served his country with distinction as part of the Navy Seabees from 1944 to 1946, stationed in Hawaii and Guam. His service was a testament to his dedication and courage, qualities that he carried with him throughout his life.

In 1969, John married the love of his life, Sydney Clemens, at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lincoln, NE. Their union has been one of mutual respect, adventure, and unwavering support. Together, they have been blessed with two children, Kristin Jenkins of Lyons, NE, and Roger (Cheryl) Kruse, of Oakland, NE, and four grandchildren: Kyle (Cait) Kruse, Jacque (Michael) Hausinger, Abbey (Alex) Defendorf, and Luke (Alex) Jenkins. John also cherishes his six great-grandchildren: Phiona, Kadence, Kyran, Emersyn, Olivia, and Clay; Tommy’s wife, Janie Jones; and stepdaughter Sissy (Marty) Radecki; many other relatives and friends.

John’s professional life was rooted in the family farm near Walthill, NE, where he dedicated himself to feeding cattle and raising grain. His passion for agriculture was matched by his commitment to community service. An active member of the First United Methodist Church in Walthill, John served as an officer for the United Methodist Men, an officer of the Administrative Board, a trustee, and a cherished member of the choir.

His involvement extended to the Masonic Lodge, Olive Branch, where he guided many initiates, and as a Shriner, he contributed to the well-being of children by transporting them to the Shriner’s Hospital and performing with the Shriner’s Chanters. John’s dedication to community was further demonstrated through his service on the Northeast Nebraska Livestock Feeders Association, the Walthill Fire and Rescue Board, and the Thurston County Board of Supervisors.

John’s love for the outdoors was evident in his work on the farm and his family adventures skiing in Colorado and Wyoming. Later, he and Sydney found joy in the warm sands of Siesta Key, Florida, during the winter months.

Known for his warmth and wisdom, John has been a confidante and mentor to many. His Saturdays, and every morning after his retirement, often featured lively discussions over coffee with fellow farmers, sharing insights and stories.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Pender Community Health Foundation Endowment, Oakland Heights and Assisted Living, or St. Croix Hospice, Fremont, NE. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to these organizations for the compassionate care provided to John.

John Kruse’s life is a testament to love, service, and community, leaving a legacy that will continue to inspire those who knew him. His memory will be cherished by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of crossing paths with him.

Services will be held on Friday, October 30, at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oakland, NE, which John’s grandfather helped to seed, at 11:00. Interment at the Oakland Cemetery will proceed the church services at 10:00.
