Final Salute

Lexington, Kentucky – Joseph Anthony O’Brien Jr., 78, born in Kingston, NY on March 31, 1948, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2026 at the Leestown VA Palliative Care Cottage, Lexington, KY, after a long and courageous battle with cancer and other health complications. Joseph is pre-deceased by his parents, Joseph and Dorothy (McGahan) O’Brien and his son, Timothy Joseph O’Brien.

Joseph is survived by his son, Courtney Joseph, and his former wife and devoted caregiver, Mary O’Brien, whose attention brought him comfort throughout his later years. He was grandfather to four grandchildren – Britt, Emma, Grace, and Jack, all of Lexington, KY. He is also survived by his sister, Franciscan Sister Dolores O’Brien and his brother, James (Kathlyn) O’Brien along with many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.

Joseph served his country during the Viet Nam Era as a Seabee in the United States Navy and was a member of the International Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Union in NY and KY for fifty years. He was an avid golfer and devoted soccer fan. Joe’s family and friends will remember his pleasure in sharing his culinary talents, especially his cookies and his specialty, cheesecake.

The family is deeply grateful for the excellent care provided by Dr. Patrick Hensley of the UKMC and the physicians, nurses, and medical staff, and also the Palliative Care Cottage staff of the Leestown VA whose compassion and dedication brought comfort and support, especially during his final days.

A Mass celebrating Joseph’s life will be held at a later date, with interment to follow at Camp Nelson National Cemetery.
