Robert J. “Bob” Rivard, age 99, a resident of Sleepy Hollow for 52 years, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home, surrounded by the love and care of his family, and his caregivers, Jean and Barbara, on Wednesday evening, September 2, 2026.
Bob was born in Superior, Wisconsin, on May 17, 1927, and was one of ten children born to the late August and Julia Margaret (née Koenig) Rivard.
A proud United States Navy veteran of World War II, Bob served with the Seabees and remained deeply proud of his military service throughout his life.
On November 21, 1953, Bob married the love of his life, Darlene L. Goeke. Together, they worked hard, built a loving home, raised their family, and created a lifetime of cherished memories. Bob and Darlene were blessed with 67 years of marriage before her passing on July 6, 2021.
Bob was a skilled carpenter and contractor. He was also a co-owner and operator of Rivard Brothers Construction, Inc. He took great pride in his work and in the craftsmanship that defined his career.
In earlier years, Bob enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved cooking, gardening, and growing orchids. He loved his Saturday morning breakfasts with his family. Bob was also a formidable—and often ruthless—checkers player, especially when competing against his grandchildren. Those spirited games became a treasured family tradition and brought him tremendous enjoyment. Above all else, Bob loved his family. Nothing meant more to him than the time they shared, and he was happiest whenever they were together.
Bob is survived by his children, Barb (Mike) Wahlers and Jim (Jennine) Rivard; his grandchildren, all of whom he loved dearly and of whom he was immensely proud, Jen (Scott) Weichle, Tiffany Wahlers, Joe Rivard, Anna Rivard, Hayley (Matt) Hickey, and Morgan Rivard; and his beloved great-granddaughters, Emilie Weichle and Myla Hickey.
Other survivors include his brother, John Rivard; several nieces and nephews; and many good and faithful friends.
In addition to his parents and his beloved wife, Darlene, Bob was preceded in death by his son, Robert J. Rivard Jr., on October 31, 2011, and his eight siblings, Oliver Rivard, Joseph Rivard, Agnes Gallagher, Bernard Rivard, Raymond Rivard, Jean Netzel, Andrew Rivard, and Mary Waltenburg.
At Bob’s request, we have accorded cremation rites. His family will mourn their loss privately, and there will be no visitation or funeral service. His inurnment will also be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Bob’s name and memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
