Final Salute

October 18, 1945 – November 23, 2022

Roger Lee Smeak, 77, Altoona, was a caring husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend. He was born to the late Reggie and Katherine Mae (Logsdon) Smeak on October 18, 1945 and stepped into Heaven on November 23, 2022.

He is survived by his second love, Darlene (Blontz) Smeak for 16 years; daughters: Rebecca Giron, Veronica Smeak and significant other Todd Weaver, Heidi Leydig and husband Shawn, Theresa Smeak and significant other Jim Miller and Beth Amy Blontz and wife Cindy Hill; a son, Gary J. Martinez; grandchildren: James Baer and significant other Alyssa Walters, Ashley Yachere and husband Andrew, Lance Leydig, James “Norman” Miller, Shawn Martinez and wife Ashley, Allysha Martinez and husband Tay, Kandis Garner and husband Brian, James Giron and wife Ashley; great grandchildren: Nolan and Ezra Mae Baer, Lylah, Maxson and Lainey Yachere, Liam Leydig, Isaiah, Madison and Noah Taylor and Aiden and Samuel Martinez; and two sisters: Darlene Shaffer and husband Guy and Mary Lou Meyers and husband Ralph.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Martha T. Smeak of almost 35 years; his son, James Martinez; step-son, Russel Blontz; and a brother, Ronald L. Smeak.

Roger worked for several coal companies. He enjoyed reading and watching old western movies.

After high school he enlisted in the U.S. Navy Seabees and served in Vietnam. He then served as a Seabee Reservist for 25 years serving during the Gulf War and Operation Desert Shield.

Friends will be received from 12 to 2 pm on Saturday, December 3, 2022 at Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, 169 Clarence Street, PO Box 636, Hyndman, PA 15545 where a memorial service will be held at 2 pm. Inurnment will take place at 3 pm at Madley Cemetery with military honors.
