Final Salute

Thomas M. Scanlon, 85 of Swampscott, died Wednesday April 15, 2026 after a lengthy illness. He was born in Swampscott to the late Charles and Margaret (Carroll) Scanlon, and graduated Swampscott High School class of 1960. Tom was hit by a train in Swampscott when he was 14 years old, which shaped who he was from that point on. He served in the US Navy as a member of the Seabees. Tom attended the National School of Heavy Equipment Operation and worked for Swampscott DPW for 42 years as a Working Forman for the Sewer Department. He was also an auxiliary police officer in Swampscott for many years. He was an active member of AA for 47 years which was a large part of his life and free time.

Tom is survived by his great niece Jessica (Reinholm) Peterson and her husband Edwin of Nahant who both served as his caretakers for several years, his niece Kerri Scanlon of Phoenix, AZ, step-daughter Robin Schults of Kennebunk, ME, nephew Tim Scanlon and his wife Robin of Marblehead, great niece Meghan Scanlon of Marblehead, nephew Kevin Scanlon, and niece Kathy Collins and her husband Bill of Lynn. Tom was predeceased by his parents, his former spouse Nancy (Eastman) Scanlon, and his siblings; Mary Alice Curtis, William “Skinny” Scanlon, Carol Ann Scanlon and Mary Lou Carroll Gormley.

A celebration of life will be held on Friday April 24, 2026 from 4-7PM at the Swampscott Fish House, 425 Humphrey St. Swampscott. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Donations in Tom’s name may be made to a charity of your choice.
