Standing proudly near the “Grinder” at Naval Base Ventura County Port Hueneme, this memorial honors the service and history of U.S. Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 40 (NMCB 40), known as the “Fighting 40.”
Originally commissioned in March 1942, NMCB 40 served with distinction during World War II before decommissioning in February 1945. The battalion was recommissioned in February 1966 and continued its legacy of excellence until its final decommissioning in September 2012.
Throughout its storied history, “Fighting 40” earned numerous accolades for its outstanding service, including:
Presidential Unit Citation (1944)
Joint Meritorious Unit Award (1993)
Navy Unit Commendations (multiple years from 1966 through 1998)
Army Valorous Unit Award (2010)
Meritorious Unit Commendations (1969-2006)
Best of Type Awards (spanning from 1967 through 2011)
