This position will be filled at either the Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2 or 3 depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2 ($106,400 - $176,000)
The selected candidate will support LANL's mission by contributing technical expertise in electrical engineering for nuclear facilities. In this role, you'll assist in ensuring electrical safety, power quality, power monitoring, and critical power reliability within and around the plutonium facility. You'll also support projects involving facility modifications, new equipment installations, and infrastructure development. Your responsibilities may include performing engineering studies such as short-circuit analysis, device coordination, equipment sizing, exterior lighting design, fault current calculations, and arc flash assessments for both medium- and low-voltage systems. You may also support demolition, installation, upgrade, and repair activities. Successful candidates may have the opportunity to qualify as a Cognizant System Engineer (CSE) for one or more Vital Safety Systems (VSS) supporting LANL Nuclear Facilities.
In this position, you'll collaborate closely with senior engineers and professionals across multiple disciplines, including fire protection, structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering, to deliver integrated, full-system design solutions. Level 2 engineers are expected to work both independently and as part of a team, demonstrating strong technical judgment, communication skills, and a willingness to learn through mentoring and professional development.
Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3 ($128,000 - $215,900)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, in this level the selected candidate will support LANL's plutonium facility, and play a critical role in ensuring electrical safety, power quality, system monitoring, and the reliability of critical power systems. Your work will directly support the Lab's national security mission by maintaining and enhancing the performance and safety of essential infrastructure in a highly regulated nuclear environment.

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 years practical work experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Current registration as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) is highly desirable.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 6 years practical work experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.
Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is highly desirable.

Work Schedule: This position may require 24/7 coverage, which could involve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees maybe eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 2 years.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
